God Has No Form! But, it’s OK to give Him one.

With our physical eyes and other senses we can only perceive matter. But, there are Deeping our deovtion for Godthings beyond sense perception that we know to exist. For example, we only see a very small percentage of the light spectrum, and we only hear a very small range of sounds; but there are waves of light & sound frequencies both above & below the range which our senses can perceive.

Now God is “Spirit”; therefore He resides in a realm of much higher consciousness, frequency or vibration, than that of dense matter. And as “Spirit”, God has no form or any particular sex or gender. But, to please a believer God’s energy can manifest through matter and He can take any form that the believer desires.

So, to help us worship God, & increase our devotion & love for Him, it is very helpful to think of God in some way. By forming a concept of God in our minds we can deepen our devotion & love for Him; which can help us to expereince Him more fully. If we were born to very loving & nurturing earthly parents it may be very easy to think of God as a very personal Entity such as an unconditionally loving & forgiving Mother, or a stern, but wise & merciful, Father. However, if our parents had passed when we were very young; if our relationship with them was strained; or if they were abusive to us; then this may be a difficult image to worship or meditate upon. Therefore, it may be better for such a person to think of God as a Best Friend, Force, Self-Aware Energy (Consciousness) or All-knowing Power. The point is, it doesn’t matter to God how you think of Him, or even what you call Him, as long as the concept you choose instills in you a greater desire to love Him; & makes you approach Him with a deep reverence and sincere devotion.

However, I will mention that in becoming a Creator, God does reveal two very personal aspects of Himself which may be helpful to you. If you look out at the universe & contemplate the vastness of space & the laws of the universe you become conscious of the idea that there seems to be some Divine & Intelligent Hand controlling it all. The force of gravity which keeps planets in their places; just the right the placement of these planets in our solar system; and the way in which similar elements come together to form diverse matter, such as stars, rocks, plants, animals, & people; seems to show that there is a Wisdom behind it all – this could be compared to the “Masculine or Fatherly” aspect of God. While when we look around at Nature, we come to see so much beauty & gentleness everywhere we turn our eyes– this one could equate to the “Feminine or Motherly” aspect of God. Therefore, Wisdom & Beauty are two aspects which we may help you cultivate a deeper devotion for the Entitiy you are worshipping. And this is why some saints speak of God in Fatherly terms (Jesus, Muhammad, the Jewish Prophets) & others (Hindu’s most specifically) refer to God as our “Divine Mother.” But, remember that in His true essence God is neither; and I am just using these terms to help some of you form an idea of God, but you can think of Him in whatever way you desire.

“God” is a concept which really is a mystery. Our finite minds cannot truly understand infinity. And any word we choose to describe God will limit or categorize Him; and God is limitless & beyond any category. To say He is a “Father” is right & wrong; to say He is a “Mother” is true & untrue; the same with the words Energy, Power, Force, Consciousness, Universal Mind, Intelligence, etc… God is all these things; and none of these things.

We only think of Him in human terms in order to better identify with what we are worshipping. It’s hard to call upon or give our love to something that we don’t understand or have a concept of. St. Augustine of Hippo, once said:

You cannot truly worship what you don’t know.”

Therefore, to deepen your relationship with God it’s quite alright to think of Him in anyway that best resonates with your own heart. Form an idea of Him that you can truly love from the deepest part of your soul & with all your strength. You can give Him any name you desire. The name doesn’t matter; in fact Abba, Allah, Adoni, Ahura Mazda, Baba, Father, God, Krishna, Lord, Ma, Mother, Ram, Shiva, YHWH, etc…. are currently all names used for the One Same Being. The only thing that matters in getting to know God is the fact that we approach Him with a pure & intense love; and that we seek Him above all things. Make God the priority of your life; give Him the reverence He deserves; & He will show Himself to you.

“I [God] grant unwavering faith to any devotee who wants to worship any form with faith…Disciplined by that faith…those devoted to Me [God] reach Me.” Bhagavad-Gita Chapter 7: 21;22;23

God bless you on your journey & remember to always – Heed the Spirit,

Anthony
