Understanding Meditation

Meditation is a technique in which we attune our mental & physical bodies to Meditation, Understanding Meditation, their spiritual source. In fact, in meditation we become aware of the existence of a spiritual essence within us. For, once we are able to get past the conscious mind we come into contact with the impulses of the soul. Now the soul is always present and seeking to be expressed; and it is in meditation that we open the way for this to be possible.

There are many types of meditation, and I cannot say one is better than any other. If you are new to meditation, then look into a few types, give them a try, and see which you feel most comfortable with. Also, the reason for why you’re seeking a meditation technique will steer you to which is the best type for you.

Some turn to meditation in order to deal with the stress & worries caused by living in the world; some take it up for medical reasons; others use it to access knowledge, or increase mental focus & creativity; while the rest may use it to come to know themselves & God.

Now, there are definite changes that take place with us when we meditate. And when meditation is properly entered into we are made stronger physically & mentally. In fact, I could write an entire book just on the health benefits that meditation brings to one’s body. And if you are interested in learning how to meditate just to gain physical results then there are many scientific & medical studies which you can search in order to learn more about it.

However, if you are seeking to increase your spiritual awareness and contact God it will be necessary to purify your body, mind, and soul. For, even the most complex technique, deeply sacred music, or most expensive incense you can buy will not lift a heart to the presence of God if it is filled with such things as greed, hatred & selfishness. Our hearts must be light and free from such heavy & burdening things in order to be raised to spiritual heights.

Also for those seeking access to a higher state of consciousness it’s very important to set an intention for your meditation & learn how to enter into it more deeply. Your intention should be to reach the highest possible state of awareness of which you are capable and that your desire to meet with your inner Self or God not be met by any distractions.

When you first sit down to meditate you will notice what the Buddhists call the “the monkey mind” & Hindus call “the deer mind”; because a million & one thoughts will come to you. And the most difficult part of meditating will be learning how to be unattached to these thoughts, not be carried away by them, and become more of just an observer of them. Dwelling on the past & thinking about the future, rather than living in the “NOW”, is just a habit which we have formed; and habits are not overcome in a day. They will take some patience and determination to overcome. Therefore, the quieting of the body & mind will come as the technique is continually practiced. Then, as a result, an inner feeling of unity rather than separateness shall be acquired. But, this doesn’t happen by any effort on our part. In fact, once we become proficient in meditation we will find that it is actually effortless.

So, don’t be hard on yourself. Just as it takes time & practice to learn how to play an instrument well, it will also require practice & perseverance to learn how to meditate deeply. But, even if you feel as though you are not progressing, know that there are changes which are happening within you. You may not notice them, but other people around you will; and this should be encouraging to you.

Also, do not go into your meditation with any preconceived notions of what you think you should be experiencing. Some people experience a moving of the body from side to side, back & forth, or circular movement of the body. Some feel a vibration or pulsing at the lower end of the spine. Others may experience vibrations running up the spine to a tingling in the forehead or top of the head. For others there is the passing into a consciousness of peace, happiness, love, and/or bliss.

The point to remember is that experiences can be different for everyone. The feelings will come, the experiences will come, but they can’t be forced & don’t seek them out. Our only intention should be to meet with our God; and if we are sincere in our effort, eventually, when God feels the time is right, the meeting shall occur.

God bless you as you walk your own spiritual path & remember to always – Heed the Spirit,

Anthony
